Google has changed local search
Back in April 2009 Google finished the worldwide rollout of local search results map. This changed the way local business can leverage the internet to get in front of potential customers. The ten results at the time appeared even when you didn't type in a location. The interface for the local results is still evolving, with google rededigning it's mobile interface for most phones in September 2009 and a redesign of local result pages in October 2009.
The page was made more readable with larger fonts but reduced the initial results to seven.
New features are contantly popping up to connect people locally. In November 2009, google added maps to local adword ads. Realtime search hit in December 2009, creating another avenue where local business can connect with consumers.
Want to be a favorite place? Google introduced "Favorite places on Google" in 2009. They started with 100,000 barcodes sent to local business. Place this on your storefront window and a mobile device can scan it to get reviews and even coupons.
What does all this mean? The internet has now become a vital tool for local business. The companies that take control of their online marketing efforts are going to be the ones that continue to grow this next decade.
